The Hanseatic city of Hamburg is home to the third largest port in Europe and is commonly known as the “gateway to the world”. The name Hamburg derives from the old German word “Hamma” which stands for swamp area by the river and the word for castle “Burg”. The oldest German stock exchange can also be found here along with one of the world’s oldest merchant banks. It is the second largest city in Germany with just under 2 million inhabitants and is our country’s musical and entertainment capital. Charming districts such as the Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus quarter are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. So as you can see, there’s plenty to see….and to gaze in wonder at!
