One of the most important of these, Albert Ballin, was responsible for opening the hotel in 1909 at a time when maritime tourism was flourishing. Hotel Atlantic Hamburg is a historic landmark. Inside and out. Since 2010, the 1909-erected building on the banks of Hamburg’s Lake Alster has been listed as a “protected monument”. “Due to historic reasons of a local, architectural and social nature, it is in the public interest to ensure the preservation of this hotel,” read a statement by the Hamburg Senate for Cultural & Media Affairs when awarding this status.
